Often overlooked the neighborhoods around Geylang Road as well as Joo Chiat are where everyday Singaporeans live, work and play. If you are looking for the "real" Singapore of today, this is where you will find it. There is a predominately Malay character, markets, cafes and small shops galore all going about their business very nicely - thank you very much in a harmonious blend of cultures and religions that is quite encouraging. Well served by the bus system and MRT, the hotels in this area are small, one off and usually family run properties that cater to regional business and leisure clientele - at local down to earth prices (same for the restaurants). You might not get 24 hour room service here, but for students and travelers on a budget the value here can really stretch your travel dollar. So if you are going to be in Singapore for a while or prefer to be off the beaten track check this area out - you may be pleasantly surprised - there are many hotels in the area that set the standard for how a budget hotel should be run.
